Musings of the Mind

I am currently reading the book Loyalty to Your Soul by H. Ronald Hulnick, Ph.D, and Mary R. Hulnick, Ph.D

The chapter titled “I am upset because…” is very interesting.   They state … “All becauses are merely triggers to internal unresolved issues inviting completion” (Pg 95) No matter what happens externally it is what happens internally that creates the upset.  It is our message to ourselves that stirs up the emotion.

Many of the messages we give ourselves are repetitious, negative and have gone on for years; so long that we are unsure when we started with that message.  We become habituated to the message, no longer aware it is actively present.  Next time you realize you are saying “I am upset because” stop to observe what your message was to yourself.  Doing this starts to open the door to knowing ourselves better.  We are responsible for our thoughts.  This means we have “the ability to respond’ (pg 106).  This does not imply that we have to change or do anything, we just need to be aware that we can make changes if we choose.  Responsibility does not mean judging the action in anyway.  We do not need to look at it as good or bad, right or wrong.  The question to ask is “is this working well for me?”   Taking the time to observe our inner talk takes time yet the resulting self-awareness and decreased angst are worth every minute of it!

  1. How true. So much “inner talk” is based on the past.
